š«The countdown is on!
āMany victims simply are so accustomed to this level of violence that they donāt consider violent treatment unusualā
World Bank, 2017
For generations, women in El Salvador have experienced various forms of violence. Today, violence persists in their daily lives and is deeply rooted in gender discrimination and social norms.
Sadly, many victims are so accustomed to high levels of violence that they perceive it as a normal part of life, making it difficult for them to recognise abuse as something unacceptable or worthy of reporting.
According to a 2017 national survey, an astounding 67% of Salvadorean women had suffered some form of violence throughout their lifetime. This included sexual assault, intimate partner violence, or various types of abuse by family members.
Despite these alarming statistics, El Salvador has one of the highest rates of crime underreporting, with only approximately 6% of victims having reported abuse or assaults to authorities.
Underreporting is primarily driven by fear of repercussions for speaking out, the shame of victimisation, harmful stereotypes, and limited access to public services for reporting.
To tackle the deeply ingrained violence in Salvadorean society, we need to be willing to go against the grain of societal norms and expectations in El Salvador that help perpetuate violence against women.
